The primary material used, a mesh fabric left unused for years, served as the initial inspiration for this creation. This marks Vanessa’s first sculpture made from fabric. The textured effect in the background of the piece was also achieved using this material. The artist was inspired by its natural silver color and added a contrasting metallic background.
The fabric used in this new piece resembles fishing nets, leading to the titles “Fishnet 1” and “Fishnet 2.” This inspiration is rooted in a significant ecological concern: every year, hundreds of thousands of marine animals are trapped and killed by marine waste, particularly abandoned fishing nets. By repurposing materials reminiscent of these nets, the artwork aims to raise awareness about the devastating impact of ocean pollution and the need to protect marine wildlife.
Highlights: It is estimated that 100,000 marine animals die each year due to plastic waste found in oceans. Fishing gear left behind by those who do not bother to retrieve it accounts for 640,000 tons of waste left in the sea annually, taking an average of 600 years to disintegrate, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Overall, more than 85% of plastic waste in our waters originates from fishing.
